Siquijor village’s Brigada Batok Basura 
encourages children’s participation

Larena, Siquijor, April 18 (PIA)—Barangay Cangmunag of San Juan townin Siquijor province has adopted Brigada Batok sa Basura program to help eradicate waste most especially plastics in its effort to address one of the crucial issues of climate change.

During the Siquijor Provincial Micro Small and Medium Enterprise(MSME) Planning earlier, Dave Laranjo, a barangay councilor who chairs the barangay’s tourism and appropriation affairs committee said that the concept of the program is adopted from the ordinance on Solid Waste Management of San Juan town.

“We want to pursue this program knowing that our barangay is one of the tourist destinations in the province,” he said.

Laranjo said the program also encourages children’s participation in environmental protection because aside from having them earn from wastes, it instill in them awareness and the value of contributing something for the environment. 

Plastic wastes are bought by the barangay government at P10.00 per kilo.

He said that children’s participation in cleaning the environment plays a vital role in slowing down the effects of climate change. 

Clean surroundings, aside from contributing to a healthy environment and healthy body, is also very appealing to the eye, Laranjo said.
     
He said that the program will also enhance the sense of participation and cooperation not only in the barangay or in the province but also for the world.   (RAC/PIA-Siquijor)

Siquijor PNP sets up tourists police office

SIQUIJOR, April 18 (PIA)—To sustain the province’s serenity and professionalize tourism service, the Philippine National Police (PNP) here is institutionalizing the police tourist office in all six towns of the province.

PNP Provincial Director Ernesto Agas, as one of its commitment during the Provincial Small and Medium Enterprise Development (PSMED) Planning vowed to maintain peace and order of the province in line with the direction of the province towards tourism development. 

Recognizing tourism as the economic driver of Siquijor Island, he said institutionalization of police tourist office in all   municipalities give the province a tourist-friendly atmosphere where tourists would love to visit and invest.

Siquijor is a safe place where criminals can hardly thrive. Because of its proximity and geography, criminals can easily be detected, he said, as he pushes the province to capitalize on this strength. (RAC/PIA-Siquijor)
