BFP awards Siquijor as best supporting LGU

SIQUIJOR, September 5 (PIA)--The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) awarded Siquijor as best supporting local government unit during its 20th anniversary celebration for the LGU's continued and remarkable support to the BFP's campaign towards a fire-safe community.

According to the BFP, the local government unit of Siquijor has provided the following rescue equipment to Siquijor Fire Station for their use in times of emergency.

Five (5) handheld radios , one radio base,  one handy chainsaw, one rescue net, one rescue ropes and two emergency lights.

Included in the package are also two units of underwater flashlights, one spine board,  two rescue axes, three self-contained breathing apparatus and 10 headlamps.

Other items were six carabiners,  six rescue pulleys,  three eight-rings, 15 life jackets, two life rings, and Delta Uniforms to all personnel of the provincial and municipal fire marshal staff.

Siquijor Mayor Richard Quezon and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council Coordinator Gilbert Briones received the award from the BFP-7 Regional Headquarter in Cebu City during its culminating ceremony in August.

According to Information Officer FO2 Zylbeth Y. Cortes, Siquijor LGU is one among the four groups of awardees from the entire Region 7.  

Cortes said the BFP Regional PRAISE COMMITTEE has chosen Siquijor as it continuously support the BFP's foremost mission and campaign towards a fire-safe community.

Cortes added the BFP recognizes the noteworthy contributions of individuals or groups like the local chief executives, volunteer fire brigades, non-government organizations, private individuals and media practitioners to the organization that significantly helped the attainment of their foremost mission. (PIA-Siquijor/mbcn/rac/rla)

DOST releases P120T to Siquijor SET-UP beneficiary

SIQUIJOR, September 5 (PIA)—The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has released some P120T to one of the beneficiaries of its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) in the province.

 RC3K’s Furniture Shop, owned by Ricky Sumalpong of  Bolos, Siquijor, Siqujor received the check from DOST Provincial Director Mario de la  Pena in August at the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Siquijor, Siquijor.

Eng. De la Pena said the amount is intended for the upgrading of its production equipment specifically the purchase of table planer and wooden moldings with accessories.

De la Pena added that the assistance allows the beneficiary to enhance its production that would increase its quality and volume as well as employment and income generation. 

"Through the project, we are able to assist thriving entrepreneurs in the province and help create employment for our rural folks," he said. (PIA-Siqujor/mbcn/rac).

Agri,trade,food fair - still best part of 40th 'Araw ng Siquijor'

SIQUIJOR, September 5, (PIA)—On  its 40th year, Siquijor province will again showcase its unique products and services that make use of indigenous raw materials and ingenuity at the 2011 Agri/Trade Food Fair and Exhibit that opens September 12 at the Provincial Capitol grounds.

A quick look at the products ranging from tourism, food to fashion and home accessories will reveal the extent to which Siquijodnons developed their local crafts and handiwork over the years, the provincial tourism council stated.

The six municipalities will feature their One Town One Product (OTOP) and put up a magnificent showcase of what their area is known for and has to offer to both locals and tourists, organizers said.

Each town will flaunt their colorful booths garnished with their finest products and unique features of the area.

Governor Shane A. Fua Jr. said the fair will serve as an opportunity to develop competitive, viable small and medium enterprises and to generate income for creative and skilled traditional craftsmen.

He said the fair will be about developing local skills using indigenous materials and promoting entrepreneurship and partnership.

The governor also said that the trade exhibit will not only serve as an avenue for the province to promote its eco-tourism thrust but will also give the locals and the agri-sectors the opportunity to showcase their best products and delicacies to the local and international tourists and guests.

Gov. Fua noted in an earlier report there is an increase influx of local and domestic tourists to the province.

“We expect to muster a huge crowd anew for this ruby jubilee celebration”, he said. (PIA-Siquijormbcn/rac/etm)
