Siquijor opens 6-day fair for 40th anniversary

SIQUIJOR, September 15 (PIA)—Serving as one of the Araw ng Siquijor’s crowd-puller the six-day Trade, Agro and Food Fair opened on September 12 at the Siquijor Capitol Grounds, Siquijor, Siquijor.
The event showcases the best of the province’s industries, resources and craftsmanship.
Products in focus are home furnishings such as Furniture, Novelty Items, Gifts and Housewares, Woodcraft, Quilted Textile Items and Paintings.
In some corners, Siquijor-processed food such as peanut products, banana chips, processed meat, dairy and bakery products are all displayed for everyone to see and taste.
Ornamental plants and varied agricultural products are lavishly and creatively put together in the other corner where booths of the six local government units stand.
Each depicting the town’s festival: “Pamukad” Festival for Enrique Villanueva; “Canoan” Festival for Larena; “Saging” for Lazi; “Lubi” for Maria; “Bugwas” for San Juan; and “Dilaab” for Siquijor.

Larena launches Zero-Waste campaign, stresses children’s role

LARENA, Siquijor, September 15 (PIA) -- The municipality of Larena launched this month its integrated solid waste management program dubbed “Zero-Waste Larena” campaign that is composed of the pioneering barangays of Helen, North and South Poblacion, Bontod, Cangbagsa and Nonoc.
During the launching, Municipal Mayor Gold L. Calibo enjoined all children to actively participate in the campaign.
Calibo said the project will not be realized overnight, not even in a month or a year, but if everyone helps success will surely be achieved.
“Mao nga gihangyo ko kamong mga kabataan sa pakuyog ug pagtabang aron ang atong lungsod mamahimong limpyo ug maanindot,” Calibo said. (I enjoin you, all children to help in the campign to make our town clean and beautiful.)
He said clean surroundings also minimize the ill effects of climate change and give healthy air which is vital component to a healthy body.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Antonio T. Cabrido, on one hand, stressed that children are good catalysts in the promotion and adaptation of the project.
He said that in the classroom, teachers demonstrate the proper ways of throwing garbage and this will be imitated by children. “As adults, it is our duty to teach them and to recognize their role at an early age,” Cabrido also said.
PENRO Cabrido and Mayor Calibo led the signing of signage for Zero-Waste Larena.
Students of Siquijor State College, Saint Vincent Academy, UCCP Learning Center and the Larena Primary School along the barangay chairmen and kagawads comprising Metro Larena also attended the launching activity. (PIA-Siquijor/rac/I.A. Abatayo)
