Siquijor 4-H gets 10 livelihood projects

LARENA, Siquijor, April 28 (PIA) -- At least 10 projects for the 4-H club of Siquijor province were funded by the Department of Agriculture-Training Institute in Region 7, according to a report from the office of the provincial agriculturist here.
Supervising Agriculturist Roselyn Bonachita said the projects that totaled P550,000 were distributed to the different 4-H clubs of the municipalities to give them livelihood opportunities.
Three of these are goat raising projects of Wow 4-H club of Cansayang, San Juan, Siquijor headed by National Gawad Saka Awardee, Elnard Ympal; Minalulan 4-H club of Maria, Siquijor thru its president, Alcris Nisnisan; and Logucan 4H also of Maria, headed by Sionielyn Magsayo.
Each of them received P50,000.
A total of six 4-H clubs engaged in swine raising projects also received funding. Larena town’s Sandstone 4-H of Barangay Sabang also received P50,000 for native chicken production.
Bonachita said the assistance was given in a form of loan with no interest.
"Out of the total P550,000 funding, more than 28 percent or P155,200 was already paid with a balance of P394,800 as of April this year, making Siquijor No. 1 in collection in Central Visayas," she said.
Earlier, Provincial Governor Orlando A. Fua Jr. hailed the livestock sector for its contribution to the province’s agricultural productivity, citing the province’s 21,013 heads of cattle, 794 carabaos, 39,489 swine, 20,024 goats, and 474,371 chickens.
“The key to this success lies in the upgrading of programs we undertook for our livestock sector during the past 10 years or so,” he said. (rmn/RAC-PIA Siquijor)

Siquijor champions in reg’l farm family forum

LARENA, Siquijor, Apr 28 (PIA) -- For five consecutive years, Siquijor province has maintained its title as grand champion in the yearly Regional Farm Family Forum and Training Workshop of the Department of Agriculture in Region 7, said supervising agriculturist Roselyn Bonachita of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist here.
Now on its 22nd year, this year’s congress was filled with trainings and workshops on different crops and livestock production management and contests such as cassava kakanin, malunggay-based dessert, fish processing, organic rice techno-demo, success story of Gawad Saka Awardee, Quiz bee, extemporaneous, poster making and minus one singing , dance and other competitions.
Bonachita said the province championed in five contests with the following winners: Harris King Omandam for 4-H Organic Rice Techno Demo and Johniño Estallo for 4H-Cooking Contest Malunggay-Based Dessert, Louie Jon Eufferneth Daug for 4-H Minus One Singing Contest.
Bontod Rural Improvement Community (RIC) of Larena, Siquijor also won the RIC Dance Contest (Kinding-Kinding) and Letecia Bayabay for RIC Hanging Rice (Puso) Making Contest.
Three of Siquijor's delegates bagged 2nd place in RIC Minus One Singing Contest, 4-H Fish Processing Demo Contest, P4MP Vhing Navarro Sing Alike Contest. They are Rose Antonette Mandal, Kreste Peral Imbong and Johnson Yap, respectively.
Third placers are Bernaddete Picardo for the 4-H Poster Making Contest and Louie Jon Euffeyneth Daug for the 4-H Cooking Demo Contest on Cassava Kakanin.
Jedo de la Peña and Francis de la Peña got consolation prizes in the 4-H Quiz Bee and 4-H Extemporaneous Spech contest.
The congress was held last April 16 to 18 at the Bohol Plaza Hotel and Restaurant Resort, Dayo, Mayabayac, Dauis, Bohol with the theme: “Paghiusa sa Pamilyang Magbabaol Padulong sa Kalamboan sa Panginabuhi ug Kalikupan.”
Participants are selected members of the RIC and 4-H club, farmers, and fisherfolks associations who excel in their fields of endeavor.
It aimed to give distinctive honor on their achievements and allow them to acquire more knowledge and skills on technology advancement for all commodities, Bonachita also said. (rmn/RAC-PIA 7, Siquijor)
