Agri offices warn Siquijodnons vs rice wastage, sufficiency level
During the first quarterly meeting held recently in the province participated by Rice Program Implementers, Officials from the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Unit 7 in Mandaue Cityraised the alert against rice wastage and bad eating habits saying the wasted cooked rice is enough to feed the people in Central Visayas of which Siqujor is part province.
DA’s Regional Technical Director for Operations, Director Angel C. Enriquez said rice implementers can be a good source of information to the people in disseminating the proper conservation of rice.
She said the agriculture department is now looking at some appropriate means to cope with rice production losses and seek more to meet food needs, make staple foods more accessible, more affordable, safe and nutritious to the populace.
In his updates of the department’s major thrusts and programs under the new administration, DA Regional Rice Program Coordinator Dr. Fabio G. Enriquez presented the Agri-Pinoy Strategic Framework with emphasis on rice production and development.
The then Regional Rice Program Coordinator, Mr. Jorge A. Paculba also supported with his update and situationer on rice in the province.
Based on 2010 food sufficiency index in the province, Paculba said rice is the staple food of the Siquijodnons indicating per capita consumption of 96.096 kilograms against corn with per capita consumption of 54.6 kilograms.
He said that rice production remains the biggest agricultural efforts of the Siquijodnon farmers considering that only 4.9 percent out of the total agricultural areas planted in two cropping seasons of 2010. Rice sufficiency level for the municipalities are Siquijor (capital town) marked eight percent, San Juan has five percent, Maria noted high with 33 percent, Lazi, 31 percent, Larena has 30 percent and Enrique Villanueva with the lowest level of three percent.

DOST –Siquijor holds training on mango processing, packaging

SIQUIJOR, May 17 (PIA)--- A three-day training on mango processing and packaging will start tomorrow, May 17 until May 19 at the Mango Processing House, Siquijor , Siquijor.
The training aims to help 25 mango growers and facilitators in the province produce quality processed mangoes that can compete with other processed products in the market, develop a sustainable supply of processes mango, and improve the operation of the project thus, increase income of the organization and its members, says Provincial Director Mario E. de la Pena of the DOST here.
He said, through this training, Siquijor province will be able to maximize use of the abundant supply of mango as it is noted that abundant supply leads those fruits to be marketed to nearby cities and provinces which are only exploited by some traders because their products are considered to be of low grade classification.
He said processing of produce is very necessary to meet the increasing production and improve mango industry in Siquijor, thus generate employment.
The training is supported by the provincial government through the Provincial Agriculture Office and the Municipal Agriculturist Office of Siquijor.
Siquijor town, de la Pena said, 50 of the 9,070 hectares total land area of Siquijor town is devoted to mango production by which most were planted in spotted areas and few in semi-commercial scale or compact area.
Mango production, he also said, is undertaken not only in the municipality but is becoming an industry in the province.
With the training he hopes that increased income revenue of the town, improved standard of living and boomed economy will be realized, he said.
The offices of the provincial and municipal agriculturists will be responsible for the monitoring of the financial and technical performance of the project during the implementation. Any management problem or weaknesses that may be encountered shall be immediately corrected to ensure success of the project, de la Pena also said. (RACalibo/PIA-Siquijor)
