Coconut authority distributes salt fertilizers to Siquijor coco farmers
By Rizalie A. Calibo

SIQUIJOR, Nov 11 (PIA) --The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA)-Siquijor distributed 6,207 bags of salt fertilizers to 2,909 coconut farmers which would increase their production and income, and therefore, encourage them to plant more.

PCA encourages coconut farmers to raise quality coconut seedlings and get paid P14/seedling; and another P16/seedling when these are planted and grown said Ma. Glemma Gallardo, PCA-Siquijor information officer in a press statement.

Gallardo added this is under the agency's ongoing participatory coconut planting programs (PCPP). At present, PCA-Siquijor is implementing the Kasaganaan sa Niyugan ay Kaunlaran ng Bayan (Kaanib) project at Camplamanas, Lazi, Siquijor.

Under the project, a group of coco farmers are gathered to establish and maintain a nursery and to take care of the coconut seedlings that the PCA offers to pay at P14/seedling to augment the farmers’ income.

Positive responses are so far seen, she said and hopes that Kaanib will be fully implemented before the year ends.

Records from the PCA say that Siquijor has 6,808 hectares of coconut farms, 6,401.2 hectares of which are owner operated and 406.8 are tenanted. (mbcn/RAC-PIA 7, Siquijor/MGGallardo-PCA)
