SIQUIJOR, March 29 (PIA) -- The provincial government is undertaking measures to improve the island’s tourist spots and to erase the negative image painted on Siquijor as the island of witchcraft and black magic.
Siquijor Gov. Orlando Fua, Jr. said he is stepping up measures for visitors to focus on the island’s real beauty and richness as it launched a new product tagline, "Siquijor, an Island of Healing!"
The improvement the governor implemented are those on roads and other infrastructure around the province that included the P4-million worth of road concreting to the airport in Cang-alwang, Siquijor, and the rehabilitation of the airport terminal.
"The airport is already functional at present," he proudly said.
Additional amenities at the Mount Bandilaan Mini-Resort in Cantabon, Siquijor and more cottages and picnic tables are already built in preparation for the tourist influx during the 'Folk Healing Festiva'l on April 2-7 in time for the Holy Week.
Another priority project is the reclamation of around 400 square-meter area at Salagdoong Beach Resort where additional cottages will be constructed, the governor bared.

SIQUIJOR, Mar 28 (PIA) -- With food security his priority agenda, the provincial government supports agriculture, fishery and livestock sectors in the province.
“Gikan pa sa una, maoy atung gihatagan ug atensyon ang pag-ayuda sa atung mga magbabaol (Since then, our attention has been focused on helping our farmers),” Governor Orlando Fua said as he cited several improvements in the province’s agricultural production.
He reported that in 2011 alone, P6 million has been allocated for the upgrading of agriculture and fishery sectors by providing farm inputs, trainings and seminars to farmers and fisherfolks provincewide.
He cited the establishment of a Bio-N factory in Tagmanocan, Laazi, Siquijor that produces biological fertilizer as a substitute to the farmers’ more costly commercial fertilizer requirement.
Instead of spending more or less P5,000 for seven sacks of commercial fertilizer for every hectare of farm, Fua said the farmers get to spend only P500 for seven sachets of Bio-N for the same size of farmland.
That is a saving of 1000 per cent, he said.
Fua also reported an increase in the production of vegetables and other crops like the onion bulb that is expected to earn more than P15 million from a target harvest of 252,000 kilos at a farmgate price of P60 this year.
The project also earned support from the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) who pledged to give another P800,000 for another 30-hectare project expansion as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Onion bulb production was initially started on a 2,660 square-meter demo farm in 2008 with 45 farmers.
Last year, 136 more farmers have ventured on the same project reaching the farm tilled to 21 hectares, he said.
Fua said they key to the success in the livestock sector lies in the upgrading programs the province has undertaken during the past 10 years as he cited the various livestock upgrading programs that resulted to the province's increase in livestock production. (mbcn/RACalibo/PIA-Siquijor)
