DENR-Siquijor meets NGP 2011 target

SIQUIJOR, Apr. 1 (PIA)--The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Siquijor said it has met the 2011 national greening program (NGP) target for Siquijor Island.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) officer Antonio Cabrido said the DENR's 2011 target of 250 hectares was 100 percent planted with various kinds of trees.
Cabrido said that rehabilitating and protecting the forests from the upland to lowland is vital and crucial to slowdown the pace and effect of climate change.
He also said that the key to success in the battlle against climate change is teamwork. "Teamwork is the name of the game for climate mitigation and adaptation measures to save our beautiful island," he added.
He said everyone must take immediate steps to protect the environment for the next generation to carry on.
The PENRO thanked the public for the support and cooperation in reaching the goal.
Presently the DENR office is also progating Balite trees that are known to be good source of water that can be used for future watersheds in the province. (mbcn/RAC/PIA-Siquijor/with reports from Inacher A. Abatayo)
